ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Kathy Jones, an artist with many varied interests and ways of creating art. lived for many years in Lake Tahoe before moving to the desert and finally landing at the beach in Southern California. She recalls a moment in Tahoe City, during an art class under the tutelage of Frieda Klein, that Kathy’s dormant passion for creating art was ignited.

Mostly self-taught, Kathy’s journey into the art world was unconventional. Wanting to beautify her home with large art pieces she couldn't afford led her to thrift stores where she would buy inexpensive canvases and transform them into unique expressions of her imagination. This resourceful approach laid the foundation for her creative endeavors, and to this day, she finds joy in repurposing canvases and imbuing them with new life.

For several years Kathy has dedicated herself to painting with tempera on canvas, a medium that has allowed her to explore her artistic instincts without a predetermined path. The ocean, her muse for the past four years, has profoundly influenced her recent works, leading her to a fascinating experiment with canvas and paper weavings. Her process, both spontaneous and meditative, begins with a blank canvas and the promise of creative joy, often using squeegees to apply paint, resulting in vivid, textured works. More recently, she’s been pushing boundaries with large 3D pieces, some affixed to canvas and others floating freely, defying traditional presentation.

Kathy’s art is a tribute to originality. Uninterested in emulating others, her works are distinguished by their authenticity and the invitation to hang them not just within the confines of indoor spaces but outside, on patios and entry walls, where they can engage with nature and the viewer in novel ways.

New to the competitive arena of art exhibitions, Kathy has found inspiration in the challenges and themes presented by art calls. Her foray into the Borrego Art Institute has been particularly rewarding, where she recently sold two weavings, marking her first commercial success. Bolstered by this success, she entered a juried art exhibition and competition at the Joshua Tree Gallery of Contemporary Art and her entry “Timeless Sands - Mirage of Gold, a paper weaving was chosen for the exhibition. Although she does not belong to any prominent publications or lists of acclaimed collectors, her acceptance in these two exhibitions stands as a testament to her growing success. Kathy has recently become a member in the Studio Channel Islands gallery in Camarillo, CA.

Kathy Jones represents the quintessential artist who thrives on passion rather than accolades, focused on living a meaningful life while allowing her art to serve as a testament to her values and beliefs. Art, she believes, holds a pivotal role in society, serving as both a reflection and an instigator of change, joy, and connection. As she continues on her artistic path, her goal remains refreshingly simple: to create, to enjoy, and to share her art with the world, hoping it brings as much happiness to others as it does to her.
